ISSUES
Immigration Reform
As the grandson of immigrants, I believe that lawful, orderly
immigration is the lifeblood of this nation. As such, I believe
that in Virginia our immigration policies should reflect certain
core principles, best articulated by Edwin Feulner and Doug
Wilson in their recent book Getting America Right;
- America’s rich diversity of peoples is at the heart of her
strength and vitality, but our basic national identity and
values bind us together as loyal Americans who are supportive of
her causes.
- The unity which we once prized and that
we encouraged our immigrants to embrace is eroding in a
dangerous trend toward cultural relativism and the cult of
diversity that threaten our very survival.
- Citizenship has been devalued, the standards watered down, and
the naturalization process itself turned into a meaningless
exercise.
- We must restore citizenship to its rightful
place as a precious privilege to be earned, and raise the
standards and strengthen the educational process to ensure that
only qualified immigrants become American citizens. -
Bilingual education has been a huge mistake that discourages
immigrants from becoming true Americans and relegates them to
second-class status; we must make sure that immigrants know our
language well enough to participate in the great democratic
debate that keeps us free.
- All the institutions of
American society must again be focused on assimilating
immigrants, teaching them – as well as our younger generations –
what it means to be an American.
