Honoring Our Veterans Because Honor
is Due
An 11-year veteran of the United States Navy, Delegate Bill
Janis understands that the liberty, prosperity, and security
that we enjoy were purchased by the blood and sacrifice of those
who have honorably served in the Armed Forces throughout our
history. That is why Delegate Janis was chief patron of House
Bill 1381, which provides long overdue recognition to the
generation of Virginians who fought against tyranny during World
War II. Signed into law in March 2003, H.B. 1381 designates
Virginia Route 288 as the “World War II Veteran's Memorial
Highway.”
As a member of the Virginia War Memorial Board of Trustees,
Delegate Janis supervises the “Virginians at War” program. This
worthwhile program collects and records the stories of our past
wars, as told by the Virginia veterans who fought them, so that
their lessons of patriotism and devotion to duty may be
preserved and passed along to future generations of Virginia
school children.
Delegate Janis is also the chief patron of House Bill 1272 for
the 2006 General Assembly session, which would expand the
Virginia War Orphan's Education Act. This bill will provide
tuition and required fees at Virginia colleges and universities
for the children of Virginians killed or disabled as a result of
their service in military operations fighting terrorism,
providing peacekeeping missions, or as a result of a terrorist
attack.
