Protecting Family Farmers with
Disaster Relief
During the summer of 2002, as Virginia suffered through yet
another year of extreme drought conditions, many small family
farmers were faced with the threat of losing their land,
livelihood, and way of life. Working with U.S. Congressman Eric
Cantor and the Bush Administration, Delegate Bill Janis helped
get U.S. Department of Agriculture disaster relief benefits,
including low-interest Farm Service Agency emergency loans, for
the farmers of Louisa and Goochland counties.
These emergency funds have helped small family farms survive and
continue to provide the quality Virginia produce we all enjoy —
regardless of where we live. According to U.S. Congressman Eric
Cantor, “Last Summer, during extreme drought conditions, I
worked with Bill to secure much needed financial assistance for
Virginia's farmers from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. I
learned first-hand that Bill's knowledge and commitment to the
56th District and Virginia are unparalleled.”
